In 1988, Taileen falls into a coma after a car accident that kills her parents. Twelve years later, she wakes up to a new life as an angel of the circle, with a new body and abilities. She must navigate her new existence and prepare for a great challenge. Taileen is aided by Niyorka, a warrior angel with mind-reading powers, who teaches her about the circle of three fallen and three righteous angels. The circle was created by God to balance the forces of good and evil after Lucifer's fallen angels wreaked havoc on humanity. When an angel dies, a mortal takes their place, and the circle is never broken for long. As Taileen tries to understand her new life, she meets the other angels, including the leaders of the righteous and fallen sides, Lazarus and Ezekiel, and the other angels with unique powers.
