Eleven-year-old Davy Allen, now the man of the house after his father's passing, forms a strong bond with an old hound dog named Buck. Buck has a neck wound from his collar and is mistreated by his owner, Mr. Thornycroft, who chokes Buck when his chain gets caught in the fence. Davy believes Buck should be free to hunt in the forest, so he decides to free him. He presents Buck as a stray who followed him home, and his mother agrees to let him keep him. However, things become complicated when Thornycroft discovers what happened to Buck, and Davy refuses to give up his new pet without a fight.
