In 1920s Amsterdam, Han van Meegeren, a rebellious young artist, struggles to gain recognition for his work in the style of Rembrandt and Vermeer. Critics dismiss him as a copycat, so he decides to prove them wrong by creating a fake Vermeer. To his surprise, it sells as a genuine piece, and he becomes embroiled in a web of deceit and lies, all while evading the truth. His life spirals out of control until he's approached by Nazi leader Hermann Göring, seeking a Vermeer for his personal collection.
