Eighteen-year-old Yonosuke Yokomichi arrives in Tokyo from Nagasaki in 1987, just as Japan is reaching the peak of its economic success. He befriends Ippei and Yui, and joins the Samba club, where he meets Kato, a gay member, and Yoko, a rich girl who shows interest in him. However, Yonosuke is infatuated with Chiharu, an older party girl. The film depicts their ordinary college life, with flashbacks to 2003, showing the characters' lives 16 years later, except for Yonosuke, who becomes a cameraman and later dies.
