Francesca James, a teenage girl, is forced to take on adult responsibilities at home due to her father's frequent absences and her mother's growing drinking problem. Despite the help of new neighbor Connie, Francesca's mother, Lillian, continues to struggle, causing chaos and danger, including a close call with a house fire. As Francesca's friends notice the issues at home, they encourage her to join AlaTeen, a support group for teenagers. Initially resistant, Francesca eventually finds value in the group's teachings and helps her mother begin to seek help.
