A retired school teacher, Mrs. Hoyle, lives in a hotel taken over by a gangster, Morganti, who forces most residents to leave. However, he lets Mrs. Hoyle and a dance-hall girl, Angela Brown, stay. Mrs. Hoyle's positive influence soon extends to Morganti and his henchmen, except for Rogan, who ignores orders and robs a market with his partner Slatterty.
