A shy hardware store employee, played by Christopher Walken, transforms into his characters during amateur theater productions. Meanwhile, a lonely telephone company employee, Susan Sarandon, joins the group and auditions for the role of Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, opposite Walken's Stanley. As they rehearse, Sarandon falls deeply in love with Walken's character, unaware of his true personality.
