In the midst of World War I, a Southern African American man flees to Chicago's meatpacking industry, only to find himself at the forefront of a labor movement among his fellow black workers.

A poor black Southerner flees to Chicago's slaughterhouses during World War I, becoming a key figure in the labor movement and leading African-American workers, despite facing opposition from his own community, including his best friend who sees him as a traitor.
