In 1930s Los Angeles, Arturo Bandini, a writer, arrives from Colorado to pen the great LA novel, but finds himself struggling with poverty, disease, and racism in the Bunker Hill neighborhood. He befriends Camilla Lopez, a beautiful and self-assured Mexican woman who serves him coffee, and receives guidance from H.L. Mencken. Despite his growing feelings for Camilla, Arturo's jealousy and fears threaten to derail their relationship.
