In the 1920s, Sicilian shepherd Giuseppe "Peppino" Torrenuova toils to support his impoverished family in Bagheria. As the decades unfold, the film follows Giuseppe's journey as he grows up, joins the Communist Party, marries, has children, and builds a political career.
