In 1936, Sheilah Graham, a witty columnist, leaves her British fiancé and travels to New York, seeking a job at the North American Newspaper Alliance. She becomes successful and is offered a position in Hollywood, where she writes a gossip column about the stars. She falls in love with F. Scott Fitzgerald, a decadent writer, and discovers he accepts any job to support his wife Zelda in an asylum and their daughter at boarding school. However, their relationship is complicated by his drinking problem.
