In a small town, a determined sheriff disobeys orders to delve into the murder of a beloved father, convinced that the accused is not guilty, and embarks on a quest to uncover the truth.

Gene Autry and his friend Jack Beaumont witness a bank robbery and the murder of Sheriff Whiteside in a small western town. After the judge, Jack's father, appoints Gene the new sheriff, Jack becomes suspicious and leaves town under uncertain circumstances. Gene must then capture Jack, who thinks Gene is betraying him, and unravel the mystery surrounding the judge's murder and a swindler named Rocky Morgan.
