Breath of Freedom background

Breath of Freedom

African-American soldiers bravely fought to free Germany from Nazi rule during World War II, despite facing racism and prejudice within their own military and in their communities back home.

African-American GIs fought for freedom and democracy in World War II, despite strict racial segregation in their own army. They liberated Germany, while facing racism at home. Featuring interviews with Colin Powell and John Lewis, the documentary explores this unknown chapter in history through veteran recollections. Black soldiers felt absurd fighting for freedom while denied it at home, but in Germany, they experienced being treated as equals for the first time, a life-changing experience. Narrated by Cuba Gooding, Jr., the film shows how WWII and its aftermath influenced the US Civil Rights Movement.
