Radio singer Joan Abbott, known as the "Crunchy-Wunchy Thrush", enrolls at Rawley College under the name Susie Smith after refusing to renew her contract with a cereal sponsor. She joins a college band and newspaper, and becomes a reporter, all while hiding her true identity.
