Gene Autry and his friend Frog Millhouse encounter Caroline Stanhope and her father, Colonel Stanhope, who are struggling to clear their mortgage by entering their horse in a rodeo. Despite Gene's warnings, the horse is injured and the Colonel loses a large sum of money to a group of crooks. Gene tries to help by offering to buy the horse, but Caroline mistakenly thinks he's in on the scheme and takes the horse back to Carolina. Gene follows, thinking the Stanhopes are trying to swindle him, but discovers they're honest people fighting to keep their land from being foreclosed by a wealthy landowner, Henry Wheeler. Gene helps the landowners by organizing a group of rodeo cowboys to cut and sell the timber themselves, thwarting Wheeler's plan to exploit their land.
