Six years after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Takako Ishikawa, a school teacher, returns to her hometown to visit friends and honor her parents who died in the bombing. While there, she stays with her friend Natsue Morikawa, who is infertile due to the bombing's side effects. Takako visits a former family friend, Iwakichi, who is now a beggar and almost blind. She discovers his grandson, Taro, living in an orphanage and learns about the lives of three former kindergarten pupils who survived the bombing.
