A young actor, Dewey, navigates the unconventional lifestyles of the 1960s counterculture, having just had a sexual encounter with an older actress, Miss Gloria. As Dewey leaves Gloria's apartment, she receives a visit from medical doctors who administer a mysterious treatment involving a blood transfusion. Meanwhile, Dewey's girlfriend Olive tries to capture his attention, while his friend Allen, a struggling actor and drug dealer, seeks financing for his directorial debut. The film explores the relationships and antics of a group of aspiring artists, including Brandex, a flirtatious actor, and Cathy, a dim-witted actress who can't decide on a blouse for an upcoming show.
