Cape Town professor David Lurie's refusal to defend himself against accusations of an affair with a colored student leads to his dismissal. He then moves to his daughter Lucy's farm, where he witnesses the harsh realities of her disadvantaged living conditions and her compassion towards the local black community. However, the farm is eventually robbed and abused by a group of violent individuals, prompting a transformation in David's character as he discovers his own capacity for altruism.
