A Hollywood director, Nicholas Ray, disappears from public view between 1963 and 1967 after two consecutive flops in his career. He abandons his family and arrives in Belgrade at the invitation of director Ratko Drazevic. Ray, a genius and communist, is also struggling with drug addiction. He's working on a project based on Dylan Thomas's novel while being pursued by his family, producer Samuel Bronston, and movie star Charlton Heston, who even hire a private detective. In Belgrade, Ray is celebrated and protected, allegedly with the backing of President Tito, but his troubles soon begin.
