Double Suicide

In feudal Osaka, a courtesan named Koharu and a married paper merchant named Jihei fall deeply in love, despite the societal norms and obstacles that stand in their way. Jihei, who is torn between his love for Koharu and his duties to his wife and family, writes a vow to free Koharu from her life as a courtesan every month, but lacks the funds to pay her ransom. As their love continues to grow, they make a vow to commit suicide together if they cannot be together on Earth. Their journey is complicated by the interference of Jihei's brother, his wife's parents, a wealthy suitor, and Osan herself, who has secrets of her own.
