In rural Southern China, the Tang family's peaceful life on their prosperous farm is disrupted by the Japanese invasion. The family's oldest sons, Lao Ta Tan and Lao Er Tan, are married and hardworking, while the youngest, Lao San Tan, is a free spirit. His wife Jade, a nonconformist, wants to improve her literacy skills by reading books, a rare practice for women in 1930s China. The family's daughter is married to Wu Lien, a city merchant who profits from selling Japanese goods. As the invasion reaches their village, the family is torn apart, with the sons joining the resistance and Wu Lien collaborating with the enemy to survive.
