In 1928 London, Ernest Briggs, a milkman, marries Ethel, a housemaid, and they have a son named Raymond in 1934. When World War II begins, Ethel reluctantly allows Raymond to be evacuated to his aunts in Dorset, while Ernest joins the fire service, where he's traumatized by the devastation. After the war, the family reunites and celebrates Raymond's return and entry into grammar school, as well as the birth of the welfare state.
