Fourteen-year-old Henrietta, known as Henri, yearns for everything she lacks. When her life takes a turn for the worse, she and her mother Kate are forced to move into a dilapidated shack on the outskirts of town, where they stay with Henri's grandmother. Determined to escape her circumstances, Henri becomes infatuated with Chat Turly, a boy from a seemingly perfect wealthy family she meets at school. As she tries to fit in with the Turlys, Henri overlooks their strange behavior, focusing instead on what she wants to see. Eventually, Henri can no longer ignore the flaws in Chat's family life and comes to appreciate what she has in a new light.
