In the Carpathian Mountains, near the Ottoman Empire, an old monastery lies hidden. The exiled confessor of Empress Elizabeth, an expert on mysterious powers, resides there. A tsarist official arrives to bring him back to St. Petersburg, but the monk refuses. The official and his servant stop in a nearby settlement, where they meet a beautiful girl and fall in love. However, they soon witness terrifying, inexplicable events and learn that the villagers believe ancient evil has been revived.
