In a rural juke joint, a sharecropper named Zeke becomes smitten with a beautiful dancer, but she has ulterior motives, using him to win a rigged craps game. His family's entire cotton crop sale is lost, leaving him with nothing. A violent confrontation ensues, resulting in his brother's mortal wounding. Zeke disappears, only to reappear as a charismatic preacher, Brother Zekiel, whose powerful sermons attract a large following. Even the dancer, Chick, is drawn to his message. However, Zeke's newfound faith is put to the test when he becomes engaged to Missy Rose, but Chick's hold on him remains strong.
