Harold, a young adult, is fascinated with death and stages fake suicides, drives a hearse, and attends funerals to cope with his obsession. His wealthy mother, determined for him to be "normal", sends him to therapy and sets him up on a computer dating service. At a series of funerals, Harold meets Maude, an 80-year-old woman who's obsessed with life and does whatever she wants, regardless of others' opinions. They form a friendship based on their shared priorities, but as Maude teaches Harold how to truly live, he falls in love with her. Their relationship is limited by time, and Maude ultimately shows Harold how to die well.
