Harvey Middleman, a New York City fireman, lives a happy life in New Jersey with his family. After a fight with his wife, he imagines rescuing a beautiful model named Lois from a fire. He actually rescues her and they fall in love, but he struggles with his moral dilemma and seeks the help of his psychiatrist, Mrs. Koogleman. However, she is too preoccupied with her own issues to assist him. Another fire breaks out, and Harvey's associate, Dinny, rescues Lois while Harvey saves a cat. Lois and Dinny fall in love, leaving Harvey to return to his wife.
