Haunting Douglas background

Haunting Douglas

A renowned choreographer reflects on his life's journey from a modest New Zealand upbringing to global recognition, as he confronts the ghosts of his past and the burden of his own mortality.

Douglas Wright's life was marked by a tumultuous relationship with his body. A gifted dancer and gymnast, he subsumed his talents to become a world-renowned choreographer. His life story was etched on his physique, as he performed self-destructive dances under the force of his imagination. Despite achieving acclaim with Paul Taylor's Dance Company, Wright's reckless behavior led to a tragic diagnosis. As his health declined, he continued to create haunting works, and the film maker, Leanne Pooley, documented his struggles, juxtaposing lush cinematography with raw DV footage of Wright's sick and injured body.
