In 1969 West Bengal, Geeta Rao is torn between her two admirers, Siddharth and Vikram, amidst the country's struggle against the ruling Congress party. When Vikram doesn't propose, Geeta moves on, only to see him start a new romance. As students protest against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, she clamps Emergency, taking away judicial powers and empowering her son Sanjay to carry out Human Rights abuses. Vikram's father is arrested, and Siddharth goes on the run, drawing Vikram into the struggle.
