As a teenager, she and her boyfriend Jack Muldowney participated in local street races. Jack, her husband and mechanic, supported her hobby, but Shirley saw it as a potential career. With the help of fellow driver Connie Kalitta, she earned the nickname "Cha-Cha," which became widely used.
