A high school freshman, T.J., struggles to cope with the loss of his mother in a car accident two months prior. His father is emotionally numb, and his grandmother tries to hold the family together. T.J. sets out to reclaim his family's car from a salvage yard, where he faces a bullying owner's son. He meets Hesher, a foul-mouthed squatter who moves in with his family, and Nicole, a kind grocery clerk who helps him. As T.J. navigates his difficult situation, he gets involved in crime, faces the bully, and watches Nicole at work, all while his grandmother tries to keep him grounded.
