A high-speed car crashes on the highway, leaving private investigator Tim Slade and managing editor Hugh Fresney pinned underneath. As they wait for the tide to arrive, Fresney recounts the murder of his boss, Clint Vaughn, allegedly by gangsters working for Nick Dyke. Slade, hired to avenge Fresney if Dyke's gang kills him, had previously been involved with Vaughn's wife Julie, but now has feelings for Dana, Vaughn's secretary.
