In 1858-9 Pennsylvania, a traveling medicine show's wagon catches fire, stranding Sally Watterson and her father. They're taken in by Mrs. Cortlandt and her grandson Peter, who's working on a pipeline to supply oil statewide. Sally and Peter fall in love and marry, but their union and Peter's ambitious project face numerous challenges.
