John "Hombre" Russell, a white man raised by Apaches, inherits a lodging house in town, but prefers to live on the reservation. He trades the property for a herd of horses and joins a stagecoach trip to Bisbee, where seven diverse passengers are heading. When the coach is robbed, Russell's leadership helps the group escape with limited water and the stolen money, leading to a life-threatening situation where their true characters are revealed as they try to evade the bandits.
