In the war-torn town of Veles, Macedonia, a young poet named Marko navigates a harsh reality. His family life is marked by his sister's bullying, his mother's passivity, and his father's struggles as a factory worker who finds solace in drinking and playing bingo. At school, Marko faces torment from a group of thuggish students led by the spoiled Levi, the son of a police captain. However, Marko finds inspiration and hope in his teacher's encouragement and a chance friendship with a thief who passes through town, furthering his education and sense of purpose.
