A disillusioned soldier returns to Brooklyn after four years, only to find it's not the paradise he remembered. He finds an unlikely roommate in a high school janitor and a job singing in a music store. There, he meets a talented pianist, a dedicated opera teacher, and a friend from England, with whom he tries to revive modern swing music and help his friends achieve their musical goals.
