Jandamarra's War background

Jandamarra's War

The arrival of European settlers in the Kimberley region in the late 1800s sparks a boom in livestock farming, with sheep and cattle being introduced to meet the increasing demand for food in southern Australia.

In the late 1800s, European settlers arrived in the Kimberley with their livestock, aiming to supply the growing population in the South. However, they soon discovered they were in land inhabited by indigenous tribes, prepared to defend their territory against the invaders. Jandamarra was born in this tumultuous era in 1873, with his spirit country on his father's side and his mother Jinny, a powerful and independent woman, belonging to the Lennard River flat lands.
