During the French Indo-China War, a French military outpost at Dien Bien Phu is besieged by massive Communist Viet Minh forces. The French garrison, short on supplies and manpower, relies on parachute drops to receive vital resources. A Chinese officer's infiltration and capture by French intelligence reveals the enemy's knowledge of French troop numbers, weapons, morale, and supplies. The French commander, General De Castries, radios Paris for reinforcements, and a group of paratroopers, including four replacement officers, are sent to aid the garrison.
