Paula's irresponsible sister Clarice returns home from Mardi Gras, announcing she's gotten married to a gigolo, Stephen Cormack. Clarice's marriage is invalid, but Cormack has skipped the country. Paula is approached by Cormack's lawyer, who mistakenly believes Paula is Clarice, and offers her $5000 to annul the marriage. Paula's lawyer convinces her to pretend to be Cormack's husband until the marriage can be annulled.
