Last Train Home background

Last Train Home

A family's journey to be reunited with their children amidst China's rapid rise to global power.

Chinese migrant workers Changhua Zhang and Suqin Chen have been apart from their children for 16 years, leaving them with elderly caregivers in the village. They only see their children once a year during Lunar New Year. The story follows their lives from 2006 to 2009, focusing on their annual trips home and their relationships with their two children, Qin and Yang. Changhua and Suqin work in a clothing sweatshop to escape poverty and provide a better future for their children, who are now at an age where they can make their own decisions. However, Qin, who is old enough to make her own choices, sees her parents' sacrifices as having a negative impact on her life, making her feel like she's had a sad existence in the village, confined to school and farm work.
