During World War II, a Jewish man buried suitcases containing precious items in the ground, only to be consumed by finding them after the war. Meanwhile, his daughter Chaya, a modern and beautiful woman, takes a job as a nanny for a Chassidic family with many children. Despite her secular ways, she forms a bond with the youngest boy, Simcha, who is unable to speak. As Passover approaches, Simcha begins to learn and chant parts of the Haggadah, but their walks in the park ultimately end in tragedy when Simcha drowns in a pond. The family blames Chaya, and tensions rise as the superintendent, a lonely and anti-Semitic man, continues to cause trouble.
