In 1774, just before the French Revolution, a group of libertines, including Madame de Dumeval, the Duke of Tesis, and the Duke of Wand, were exiled from the Puritan court of Louis XVI. Their goal was to spread their philosophy of enlightenment, which rejected morality and authority, and find a safe haven to continue their hedonistic pursuits.
