Local businessmen, Pete Gromek and his partners, suspect that the capital might be hidden for Chuck and are willing to keep it a secret from the authorities. Meanwhile, Chuck's housekeeper, Mrs. Ford, steals his father's diary, which contains the answers he's looking for. She is later found dead, and Chuck's teenage first love, Jeanine Blaylock, is also found stabbed to death.
