A former medical student, Judith Nelson, is left reeling after her husband, a physician, leaves her for another doctor. She now resides in a luxurious New York apartment, searching for a new purpose in life. Meanwhile, Pat Francato, a janitor and lift-boy, is struggling with his own demons, including gambling debts and the tragic loss of his daughter.
