A former medical student, Judith Nelson, is left reeling after her husband, a physician, leaves her for another doctor. She now resides in a luxurious New York apartment, searching for a new purpose in life. Meanwhile, Pat Francato, a janitor and lift-boy, is struggling with his own demons, including gambling debts and the tragic loss of his daughter. The two form an unlikely bond, helping each other to overcome their individual struggles. However, their fragile friendship is vulnerable to destruction if they make the wrong move.
