Scott Carter, a fair-skinned African American, marries Marsha Mitchell and moves to Georgia after graduating from medical school. He faces racism at the black clinic, where a job is given to a Southerner, and discovers that his light skin may have contributed to the decision. Defeated, Scott returns to Massachusetts, struggles to find employment as an African American, and eventually takes a job as a white man at Portsmouth Hospital. He saves a doctor's life and is encouraged to take a position in Keenham, New Hampshire, where he continues to "pass" as white. For 20 years, the Carters live peacefully, but when Scott and his son Howard join the military during World War II, an investigation reveals his black heritage, and he is barred from becoming an officer.
