A dyspeptic American businessman, Robert Traven, arrives in Naples, exhausted from a long flight. He's visited by Antonio Jassiello, a bank clerk, who claims to be an old friend from the war. Initially, Traven doesn't recognize him and feels scammed. However, a photo of him and his sister sparks his memory, and he seeks out Antonio to apologize. As he reconnects with Antonio's family, including his sister and her husband, Traven discovers that Antonio has been writing fake letters claiming heroic adventures, making Traven reevaluate his priorities between his company's interests and the family's needs.
