Melinda's world is confined to a small, restrictive environment where she's forbidden from celebrating birthdays or holidays. She finds comfort in small pleasures, including a spider web, her treasure box, and a stolen afternoon at Silver Lake. As the story progresses, Melinda experiences both comfort and pain. She's introduced to new experiences by a writer, a professor, and a waitress, and receives her first romantic attention from a boy. However, tragedy strikes, shattering her innocence. Despite the devastation, Melinda's resilience ultimately leads to her triumph.
