The Memphis Belle, a US Army Air Corps B-17 bomber, is nearing the completion of its 25th mission in May 1943. Its crew of 10, led by Captain Dennis Dearborn, has a remarkable record of success with no incidents, but the war effort is increasingly grim. If they complete their next mission, they will be the first B-17 crew to finish their tour of duty. A visiting communications officer, Lt. Col. Bruce Derringer, wants to publicize their achievement, but the base commander, Col. Craig Harriman, prefers to treat them like any other crew. The crew's diverse personalities and backgrounds make their differing views on Derringer's plan and their last mission, into enemy territory over Bremen, Germany, even more complex.
