In the small Irish town of Middletown, a young boy named Gabriel is told by his father and preacher that he is chosen by God for a special purpose. Years later, Gabriel returns to his hometown as the new preacher, but finds it plagued by drinking, gambling, and lack of faith. His brother Jim and sister-in-law Caroline are no exception, with Caroline refusing to have their child baptized and Jim struggling with his own moral compass.
