A man, Duff Anderson, moves to a small town to work on the railroad, where he falls for Josie, despite her preacher father's disapproval. They get married and Duff finds a job in a mill, but he decides not to bring his son to live with them. However, his efforts to unionize the workers lead to him being fired, and he struggles to find new employment, eventually becoming abusive and leaving his family.
